Indigenous Filmmakers from Oaxaca Discuss Human Rights Violations, Social Unrest and Indigenous Demands in Mexico
The 13th Native American Film + Video Festival kicks off at the National Museum of the American Indian this weekend, running from November 30th to December 3rd. The festival presents 125 films - award-winning shorts, features and documentaries. We are joined by two of the filmmakers, who are showing separate films and hail from different parts of Oaxaca. They share their perspectives on the recent and long-running struggles for Indigenous lands and rights in Mexico.
Bertha Rodriguez Santos (Chatin), a filmmaker and freelance reporter for U.S. and Mexican news organizations. Her film is called La Tierra es Nuestra Esperanza (the land is our home: resistance to the 'Plan Puebla Panama.')
Filoteo Gomez Martinez, (Mixe) director and filmmaker, an active member of Ojo de Agua. His film is called Dulce Convivencia (Sweet Gatherings).
